Birthdays, Grads and Blooming

Here's the little fawn whose Birthday was May 20th.

This photo may show just how small the fawn was
on May 21st...a wet cloudy day...for it's first visit.

Late the evening before...
I had viewed the 'soon to be mother' entering the woods by the gazebo...then the next morning it
tiptoed into my flower garden...and lay between young coneflowers and ornamental grass.
I was spreading mulch later and didn't actually see it leave.

Later that evening...mom was seen nursing the fawn in the field...while another...born last year stood watch!
Mom and the older one left as the fawn lay hidden in a circle of day lilies in the field.

An hour or so later....a severe thunderstorm blew in....
with heavy rain and a downpour of quarter-inch hail.
~photos enlarge~

From the house...we saw the fawn stand up a few times.
 He/she endured it though....thoroughly drenched...
it just snuggled back in and was still there at dark...ALONE!

The fawn was gone the next morning....Alivia and I searched...but only found a tiny toad which let her pet him and a small rain pond, in which she waded! While walking her home she spied a rabbit and a heart-shaped rose petal....
....but no fawn.

Found this bird's nest made of small twigs and dried grasses with leaves molded to the round bottom lying on the ground. A Robin's hatched egg was under a pine tree...saw a small brown snail clinging to a dying tree and two moths that look like lichen and tree bark, but no little fawn.

Three hearts and a funny face were found in the woods....
...but still no fawn!

One morning I went out to investigate the results of overnight high winds...the top half of a tulip tree near the shed out back had been brought down...
...and...
there was the little fawn just beside the broken branches!

The broken tulip tree...which is soft wood anyway...had been weakened by multiple woodpecker holes...6 in a row!

This is a much larger tulip tree at the end of the field...
from which we have hung swings in the past.
The ropes have weathered...Alivia would like them repaired!

She wants the Honesty seeds to mature so she can remove the dried outer skin and view the shiny 'money' inside.
The flowers in the woods are mostly green and white at this time. Blackberry, Baneberry, May Apple fruit, Hawkweed and the Waterleaf plants are shown.

Here's the Waterleaf growing on a shady hilltop in the woods.

This is a dead Cedar tree...in the midst of a sea of green...
...it will probably remain upright for years.

Here are trees that 'have' fallen and now nourish fungi of
different earthy shades of color.

Our nourishment has had similar shades of earthy color.
Potato salad, black bean burger, veggie sausage biscuits, peas&carrots with pistachio nuts, spicy chicken and peas, cherry mango tart, iced coffee, chopped salads, fish, baked potato with Greek yogurt, coleslaw and spaghetti.

Not much color here by the house during this period of time.
Plenty of green 4-leaf clovers to be found though!

These are past and present photos of
 granddaughter Katie and grandson Grant!
Katie took a photo of the 17 four-leaf clovers she found...and Grant left on his scooter after visiting.
Both Grant and Katie just graduated HS.

Granddaughter Amanda just graduated Wilmington College....
and Monday was little sister Alivia's 8th Birthday!
She celebrated it Sunday with friends at Run, Jump & Play!

Yesterday, Amanda picked Alivia up at school, took her to Barnes and Noble to buy books and then they had dinner at Toot's....just the two of them!

That's the latest news about 4 of the 9 grandchildren!
They're all blooming, some coming of age and on their own and some soon to be!

The roses in the garden are blooming too...along with the wild ones around the yard that come up on their own!  The wild ones don't bloom all summer though.

Peonies, Mexican Primrose, Scabiosa and wild Milkweed!
Of these....the blue Scabiosa is the only one to bloom all summer!

Early morning skies of blue have been greeting me lately!

The first things lit by a line of sunshine filtering through the trees in the morning are the gazing ball, the trunk of an Oak tree, a swing in the gazebo.....

...and this stand of ornamental grass!

Maybe the fawn will come back to it on a sunny morning!

The fawn has had two more unnerving experiences....
I'll save them for next time!

Cautious...Doing Well...Delighted

There have been a few intermittent days of sun between...
drenching days of rain. It has rained 18 of the past 23 days!

~all photos enlarge~

It has been a 'VERY WET' Spring!
Walking down my favorite path has been...
a slippery exercise of caution!

The Fern Valley Path takes me past Alivia's Treasure Tree!

This is looking back from a level area to the path up the hillside...
that I just traveled down...coming from the backyard.

I can always find picturesque mushrooms in this area...
on the old fallen trees and stumps.

This is another favorite hillside that's behind the garden in the field.
It overlooks a creek and is fairly steep...but deer have made paths...
that make it manageable.

The turtles manage the climb and seem to like it here too.
This was a very small one I discovered there.

Three others that I have come across.....since I last posted.
I try to keep an ongoing list of individual turtles...
by comparing their shell designs.  NOT- a simple task!

On returning home one day...this is what greeted me!
Very cute, but very helpless and seemed to have left the nest a little too soon for it's own good.

Herhusband gently placed the Titmouse back for a few more days of maturing. See it peeping out? Maybe...it's learned...
...to be cautious.

When I last posted...the covering of leaves was just barely there.

Later...the Locust and Honeysuckle blooms came in thick!

Here's a sampling of wild flowers appearing in the woods.

They spread and thicken more and more each year!

I've naturalized some to my flower garden.
The yellow Two-flowered Cynthia...the red Fire Pink...
& the blue Spiderwort are doing well.

Mr. Toad returned and is doing well too!

The Indigo Bunting returns to the feeder each Spring...
but mostly stays deep in the woods during Summer.

The Flickers are year round visitors. These two played hide-and-seek and danced around this Dogwood tree for twenty minutes.

I wish my Iris, Poppies and Roses were year round visitors. At least...unlike the Iris and Poppies... the Roses will bloom all summer!

A few other sightings were of the Goodyear Blimp, a baby squirrel, Pileated Woodpecker, a Bluebird couple, an 'expectant' mother deer, a resting Dove...
 and a visiting Grandson Grant...
(who's doing very well...along with his Uncle Rick)!

A few of the meals prepared here and there.

Desserts are fruity this time of year.
Strawberry-Kiwi Shortcake &
Mango-Peach-Pecan-Delight Cake!

I was delighted to see a heart-shaped light coming through...
at the top of this old dead tree!

...and...
I was extremely delighted to see this cautious tiny fawn
creeping into my flower garden.

More on the fawn and his 'adventurous' first few days of life!
In my next post of course!

Enjoying Spring

Just like this Wild Geranium...things are looking up!

Health concerns of both my son and grandson have improved.
The darkness of days of worry for them...

have lightened...there's a rainbow on the horizon.

Alivia and I can get back to fully enjoying Spring...
and all it's rain...

...even when it turns our serene little creeks into raging rapids.

(all photos enlarge)

The trees around us are leafing into a light canopy of green.

Wild Ragwort is left to do as it pleases.

Trilliums have sprung up on their own in the flower bed.

Several May Apples are coming up with the Day Lilies....

...and my Lily of the Valley are free to roam.

Even Wild Violets have taken up permanent residence along the drive.

Near the edge of the woods, one can find...
Jack-in-the-pulpit---Goldenseal flower---wild Ginger...
a May Apple plant bound by a leaf...
a Paw paw bloom and a large brown fungus.

Deeper in the woods...some random photos....
of cracked logs---trees with hearts and holes....
odd shaped trees, rocks and snags...
an old fence post holding a hickory nut...
and a garter snake on the ground!

Large rocks are slowly losing their support in the creek bed.
Water flowing around a small round heart.
Heart-shaped lichen on a Beech tree.
Rock on a stump...large quartz-like rock in the woods...
and a small yellow wood violet.

Here's a yellow violet by a large moss covered log...
with a Jack-in-the-pulpit and a May Apple forming nearby.

A fairly Large Jack!

A very blurry photo of a wild Larkspur.

The woods are spotted with wild Phlox....

and of course....White Trilliums...

pale pink Trilliums....

...and darker pink Trilliums.

While walking in the woods....
I came upon 5 baby Wrens...that scattered quickly
I startled them and they startled me!
I only managed to capture a photo of one.

Did you notice the smiling tree on the left?

These two seem to be seriously staring down each other.
A female Cardinal and a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

While these two Mourning Doves....
seem to be seriously ignoring each other.

....and I seem to be seriously behind in posting...
but will do better in the future.
Things are getting back to normal.
I've even been visited by turtles and toads.
Photos next time.
