The Allusive Wood Thrush

First thing I hear when going out my door...
is the singing of birds.

While I'm sitting on my front porch...
I can hear.....the song of the Wood Thrush,
or
while walking in the garden I can always
hear.....the song of the Wood Thrush.
~

I can capture photos of most birds rather easily...
like this Chipping Sparrow in the clover...
~

or this House Finch at the fountain...
checking it out...

but this is the one and only photo I have of
a Wood Thrush....You can barely see him.
I want a better one!

Poem for Wednesday!
~
The Allusive Wood Thrush

Not quiet-but shy, the Wood Thrush may be,
he likes to "visit and comment"...just like me!
He lands and sings from the shadows above,
a beautiful sweet song, anyone would love.

Though he's never willing.....to just sit still,
get his perfect photo.....some day I will.
Just like me.....he prefers flitting about,
Always following me, when I venture out.

Carrying my camera, while on my way,
patience and persistence pays off they say,
very close attention.....I just need to pay,
cause the blog needs a post.....later today.

I'm just like a sleuth.....when outside now,
like a hunting dog with his nose to the ground,
like a storm chaser, when bad weather's found,
I go out looking, watching, and searching around.

Composing and posting takes up some time,
especially when......Marcy wants it to rhyme.
Have I written poems? Yes, back in my prime.
Right now though...only this comes to mind!

National Audubon Society Photo

The Wood Thrush's
melodic "Ee-oh-lay" song
alerts visitors to its presence;
this species is easier to hear than see.
The Wood Thrush is best known
for its hauntingly beautiful song.
A large and heavily spotted thrush,
it is a bird of the interior forest,
seldom
seen outside the deep woods.
Thrushes have a complicated
syrinx (song box) that allows them
to sing two notes at the same time
and harmonize with their own voice.

Almost everyday I try to get a better photo...
but here is a video of just the song.

Oh Wanda you are such a poet. Another talent you've kept hidden until lately. I know Marcy will be very proud of you! I enjoyed the video, I love listening to the birds!

Terrific poem, Wanda, I'm still smiling! I'm confident you'll get a knockout photo one day soon!

Ooh that's a beautiful song they sing. Great poem too!

And your front porch looks so inviting and peaceful. I'd love to have a porch like that to sit on and listen to nature.

Hi Wanda,
I really enjoyed your poem...you do have quite a talent. It is pretty tough to make words rhyme, but seen to have a knack for it.

I bet one day that Wood Thrush will land on your shoulder...but by his colors it looks as if he likes to hide and blend in with the background, probably a very timid little guy, who would rather sing you a beautiful song, than to show off. I loved the video, of his song!

Beautiful poem, Wanda.
A photographer and a poet! Well, they are both artistic talents, so it's not a big surprise. Very nice.

Beautiful pictures (as usual!), and I agree with Teresa, in fact, I'm surprised the Wood Thrush hasn't already come and posed for you! I'll say a prayer to St. Francis.

The video was great and he does have a beautiful song.
We have those crazy green parrots by us and they squawk so loud, not a nice song at all.
But we do have those morning doves (or is it mourning doves, I would think 'mourning' because even though their song is so beautiful, it does sound like they are so sad), I love listening to them in the morning before I get up out of bed.

Hi Wanda!
I love the wood thrush song too, and I go on searches every spring just to hear them. We live so close to heavily wooded areas, and I'm turning our yard into a tree-filled sanctuary, so they have sung for me very close up. It is a pure heaven song, I think. It's no surprise that robins are in the same family. I love to hear them too.

I didn't know that little fellow was a chipping sparrow-we have them-they are so cute.
We are fortunate to live very close to Cornell's Ornithology Lab, and have walked on the bird trails many times. A visit to their site is always fun. And I LOVE visiting you. Your yard is heavenly too.

Hi Wanda-

A lovely poem - with such gentle willingness to be patient to the wonder of nature and all it's creatures. And your photos of your space and place - my-my-my, I am so calmed by your view and serenity. I know of similar beauty, here, as it is all around me, yet - from your land I sense the world - your world - and I am overjoyed. "thank you".

Love to you
Gail
peace......

Hi Wanda

Your poem is lovely but this verse

I'm just like a sleuth.....
when outside now,
like a hunting dog
with his nose to the ground,
like a storm chaser,
when bad weather's found,
I go out looking,
watching,
and searching around.

is really, really good...

I think it should become your catch cry - your mantra as you await the appearance of the elusive thrush...

Happy days

Hi Wanda...
I really enjoyed this post...The recording of the song was such a great idea. I loved listening to it...The "Ee-oh-lay" song was definitely distinguishable!
And what a pretty bird the wood thrush is!
Your poem made me smile several times... Blessings,

I cannot even get a good photo of the beautiful but common cardinals that visit our feeder every day. You are skillful. I will appreciate the thrush recording when I get the sound back on my computer.

That was a very nice poem and the pictures are beautiful as usual. I am amazed to know one more time, that you know the names of all flora and fauna! Wow! Even if you studied it, it takes a lot to remember so much :)

Wow! Wanda,
Such a beautiful post. I love your front porch. It looks so inviting. I can just imagine sitting there with a glass of whatever and reading a book. The poem did capture the beauty that surrounds your beautiful property.
Take care.

I love the poem! And have no doubt that you will get a photo one of these days that you are happy with! Nothing like singing birds on a summer morning. It bids you to greet the day!

Thank each and every one of you for making me feel so good...I went out very early this morning to pick blackberries while the overcast skies kept it cool...glad I did...the sun is heating things up now...and coming in to find so many friendly visitors had been here while I was out...made me smile! Thank you!

Blessings each day said...

Oh Wanda...it would be criminal {gosh, I still sound like the police, don't I? :o)} for you to keep the rest of us from your poetry when it's so delightfully good!!

Downstairs there's another load of clothes for me to put outside to dry, but your posts lure me away!

Love your porch and can imagine how peaceful it sould be to just sit there.

You are a GREAT sleuth at capturing all the wonderful wildlife around you.

Personally I think your shot of the wood thrush is perfect as i was so pleased when I enlarged it and saw him/her!!

blessings and hugs,

marcy

Awwww!!! Thank you!! You know I was thinking the exact same thing, I hope she takes a video so that we can hear him. Beautiful bird, lovely song. Thanks for sharing this, it always feels like I'm right there with you.

Hello Wanda,

I believe the Wood Thrush is your alter-ego. Like you, it doesn't like to be photographed. It loves to sojourn in Nature, AND -like you - it sings a beautiful song.

In answer to your question to me - yes, I am sometimes lost in the backcountry, but I use common sense to find my way again.

I suspect when you least expect it, the Wood Thrush will show itself to you.

Lovely poem...as I read this post I am being serenaded by a Carolina Wren...love their song..so big from so small a creature.

I have an award for you at my blog Wanda, will you come and get it?

Eileen said...

Wanda, I'd appreciate it so much if you would come to my blog to participate in a very special award created by a Mom in memory of her son.
Thanks so much,
Eileen

Eileen said...

Wanda, I answered you on my blog, but I thought I'd come here to and apologize for the confusion. Yes, definitely I meant for you also to have the award, and to pass it on to others, and to ask them in turn to keep it going. I think it would be nice for this special award to go around the blog world.
Thanks, Wanda.

Hi Wanda, I love your website. I love listening to the wood thrush. He sounds so peaceful. I'm going thru a tough time right now with my husband having cancer and that little bird has helped me get thru these past few days. When I hear him sing, I just know everything is going to be okay. I love your poem.
