Summer Favorite

Blackberry Crisp is a summer favorite of mine...
..made with berries I pick myself....

Thursday morning I went out early, with an
overcast sky...and a gentle breeze...my camera,
two plastic pails, and long sleeves...
to pick the blackberries near the field.
~

You need to move slowly, look over, above,
under, behind, around, beneath, between,
and still...you may miss berries...
and get snagged!!!
I managed to pick 2 quarts in an hour
with just a few minor confrontations
with the briers...

They ranged in size...but most were of
this nature.

I washed them twice and put them aside.

Again this morning I went out very early,
right after reading Bernie's Blog.
Blackberries will ripen overnight...
Dylan says they ripen as soon as you pick
and leave an area...he may be right!

Herhusband told me to watch out for snakes...
as I went out the door.
Guess what I found...

~
No...
not a snake...

just a Walking Stick bug...

He had fallen into the pail first thing...

then guess what hissed at me...

after I stepped on it....

~
No...
not a snake...

just a turtle buried under a tangle of vines.

I finished after an hour and went back to
the house...
and while Herhusband was washing the van...

I washed some blackberries again...

I ended up with 2 1/2 more quarts today...

which I used 4 cups of...for the crisp...
placing them in a deep pie pan....
sprinkled them with 1/2 cup of sugar
and 2 teas. of cornstarch...

then made a topping by cutting a stick of butter
into 3/4 cups of flour, 3/4 cups rolled oats,
1/2 cup br. sugar, 1/2 teas. cinnamon, and about
3 Tb. of chopped almond pieces...

then baked it at 400 * for about 30 minutes.

Left it to cool on the counter....

while I ate a salad for lunch....

and then afterwards...dished it up for dessert!

I took mine with me to finish reading the blogs
of all my friends and discovered an award from
Jientje and an award from Eileen.
Thank you both!
I will accept, show and pass them on later...
but now I am going to have my first taste
of the season of my "summer favorite"...

and it was delicious...

right down to the last bite!

Wish I could share it...with all of you!

I smelled the crisp from the minute - no, the SECOND - I scrolled the first picture onto my screen! By the time I saw the ice cream on top, I was in agony! If I knew where to go to find a bite of this, I'd be there NOW! What beautiful berries! My mouth is watering.

Just love how you post...makes me always feel right beside you, Wanda(that would be delightful). The snake thing was so cute, especially because you did NOT find a snake, although you probably would have used your Snow White charms on him and he would have just gone along with you and helped to pick the berries!!

How clever of you to out a coin beside the berries! It was really neat to see you progressively eat that delighful treat...guess I need to get out and pick the thornless (yahoo) black raspberries (wish I could send this prolific plant to you) and make a dessert too!

blessings and hugs,

marcy

Hi Wanda -

oh my goodness - I was with you every step of the way - and I could feel the berries juices on my fingers and the bumps and I tasted their sweet nectar. I love your recipe which I jotteddown, hope that is okay - AND I could smell and taste the black berry crisp. mmmmmmmmmm

My Dad's favorite berry was elderberry (sp) - we had bushes of it growing in our yard when I was a kid and my Mom made jam every year. :-) Thatis a nice memory and your wonderful post brought that back to mind. "thank you".

Enjoy your weekend.

Love to you
Gail

Thank you for thinking of me today Wanda. I had cut myself a gigantic piece of chocolate cake today (I've never had a piece that big!) to help drown my sorrows. After seeing your blackberry crisp I would have much rather of had that.

Wanda, I wish you could share, too! We have a few black raspberries but not nearly enough to fill a pie plate. Perhaps a little tart? Your recipe looks delish!

It's been years since I've seen a Box Turtle and a Walking Stick - lucky you!

That looks so good, Wanda. Loved how you told the story. And I really enjoyed the pictures too.
The topping reminds me of the apple crisp we make in the Fall after apple-picking in Connecticut. But this looks so much more appetizing for a summer dessert.
Thanks for posting the recipe.

Hello Wanda

Although I have just had my bowl of paw paw (papaya) and home made muesli with home made yoghurt I couldn't help but long to be at your place...

We call this dessert crumble and it may be made with apple, or rhubarb, or or a combination of the above or with berry additions too. We often have it with custard.

How lovely to go and pick your own berries - food is so much better when lovingly and reverently prepared as you have done.

I attribute my parents longevity in part to their living off their own produce even though they are on a small 1/8th acre of pavlova paradise as it is called in NZ,
my dad has tended his gardens for over 60 years, and the lovely thing is that now the garden beds all have frames around them of about 9" height because over 60 years he has added tons of compost...

Unfortunately the gardens will never be sown again. He entered a nursing home last week after a mild stroke...The nursing home is very close to their home so my mother can walk to see him and have lunch with him each day. Life goes on...

Happy days

That looks delicious enough for me to scoop some out and eat :)

It feels wonderful to see your pictures of living in the middle of mother nature. So little of the green patch remains where I live. They want to build houses everywhere!

And Wanda, thank you SO much for sharing that recipe with us ( I remember I always pestered you for those :) ) I shall remember it, try it out when I have as many blackberrys and shall tell you how my experiment went :)

By the way that salad looks very appealing too! And I sure admire your cutlery :)

The napkin by the bowl in the last picture was SO beautiful. Do tell me where you get all that from :) I'd want to buy identical stuff when I have a home of my own :)

Thank everyone of you for leaving such nice comments for me...I still feel guilty not commenting back to each one individually...Just know I am very grateful and sometimes maybe just a little embarrassed by your generous words...my excuse is...remember I'm shy! :)

Jackie...Thank you...
it's one received, after another camera still under warranty quit working...it's a FUJIFILM FinePix S700.

Stillness...Thank you...
I usually shop Target, Kolhs, or Meijers...my things are very affordable...they are usually things I really like or clearance items.

Now doggone it, Wanda, this is just wrong!

Here I sit with my morning coffee…I click on your blog…and what do I see but this scrumptious image of Blackberry Crisp! Followed by a whole page of tempting images…one yummy pix after another…luscious, mouthwatering, delectable…each looking more delicious than the last! And then you up the ante with a scoop of ice cream!

I have salivated on my desk, possibly on my keyboard. It is your fault if it quits working and I can never blog again. Your guilt, to carry the rest of your life!

Have you no shame? Do you take no pity on your pie-less readership?

What's more, the sky is dark and getting darker. No doubt it will rain soon. So I can't go out, find a berry patch along the river, and pick the makin's of my own Blackberry Crisp. Not today…today I must do without, reduced to drooling over your posting. Pining for pie….

Do you make jelly out of them?
I have never tried, but the blackberries grow well here too!

Yum yum yum. Looks delicious. I am going to make it. Our berries aren't ready yet :(

Neat stick bug. I don't know if we have those here. If so, I've never seen one, other than a dead one in a jar in science class in 8th grade, many, many years ago.

I knew you had a mean streak hidden somewhere! What a tease ;-( My blackberries are not quite ripe yet and now thanks to you I have become very impatient for them to be ready for my crisp ;-) thanks again for a great post.

YUMMY! My husband loves blackberries (so do the Grands). I will use your recipe to wow them. When I was a girl, I squeezed in the narrow space between the fence and the barn to get to the wild blackberry bushes. Unfortunately, there was also poison ivy in there! Really enjoyed seeing the walking stick.

A much deserved award Wanda! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, it looks delicious. I wish could go out in the woods to pick them, but I don't know where to find some where I live, and I don't know if people would not give me strange looks if I pick them at the park? I used to love doing that, and make homemade jam from them. Delicious. What a lovely memory you have triggered with this post!
