......Snow and Cold

It's been very cold here...just ask...
granddaughter Alivia!

Our last snow storm left the ground
and the porches deep in snow...
~

The birds come continuously to the
back porch looking for seeds.

Sometimes there are twenty Cardinals
at one feeder alone!

(enlarge to count)

One day after filling the feeder
with sunflower seeds....
I walked down the drive to meet Alivia.

From this angle...
the drive looks worse than it is.

Alivia found the drive
easy enough to navigate...
first down hill....

and then up the other side...
making it look easy...

until...
with the snow...
she did collide.

On farther down...
she was fooling around...

and again...
found herself....back on the ground.

She wanted to sit...
on this bench covered with snow...

and...until I sat down too....
wouldn't agree to go!

When she did leave...

it was only.....
to lay down in the snow.

I just followed...
wherever she led...
I would just go!

She discovered a maze....

Grampa's tire tracks...

he left in the snow!

Then on to the icicles
from the roof hanging low...

then off to show Grampa.....
around to the basement below.

Quickly...I called her back...
after taking this photo...
I then...let her go!

She wasn't inside...very long at all...
she sat down for this photo...
it wasn't a fall!

We walked on the path....

often.... she would run....

even laying down...
sometimes just for fun.

When asked...
if we could visit the creek...
I had to decline...
the side of the hill is way too steep
.....a perilous incline!

Then off she ran...
to go inside...

Then she slipped...
fell on her backside!

But...
not to fear...
she managed to slide!

But...
after loosing a glove...
those cold little fingers...
she could hardly bend.

With that.....I grasped.....
the good excuse to go in!
~

Six to eight inches
are expected over night...
We could possibly...
be snowed in....
if that predition...
turns out right!

A Junco, Titmouse, Cardinal, & Downy

Alivia is a beautiful bright spot in a snowy day. I love her rosy cheeks. That is one BIG icicle! Don't you love the energy and enthusiasm of children? They'll keep us young (in spirit) Wanda! Your crowded bird buffet is just amazing. So many red cardinals to brighten your day. Stay cozy and weather the storm, Wanda.

Brrr, that make me feel chilly! Alivia is having fun! I grew up never seeing snow. You certainly have a lot of it!

We're having a few cold days after very hot for weeks on end. Light cardigan weather today. I'm loving the Winter Olympics! Just watched the beautiful figure skating.

Cheers, xa

Pretty in pink Alivia was! The first photo was just perfect Wanda. Seems that you both had a good time! And I was amazed to see all of those cardinals at one time, that was really neat.

Hello! I so enjoyed looking at all the birds you have visiting and especially at all the cardinals! Wow, I have never had but one or two and none this winter for some reason. And Alivia is a lovely little girl. What fun you two must have had in the snow. I made my first snow angel this winter since I was a little girl and boy was it fun!

Love those cardinals - we don't have them in Europe. Stay safe and warm!

Alivia would brighten up the snowiest of days. That's one huge icicle!
I've never seen that many Cardinals at one feeder...amazing!
A lovely post, as always.

The first picture of Alivia with her pink cheeks and pink snowsuit filled my heart with joy and I know what a joy she is to you and HH.....she is so sweet Wanda and it looks like you had much fun in the snow....children gives us the chance to go back in time remembering how much fun we had in the snow as children. Oh I loved seeing her have fun.
Amazing all those birds at your feeder, I keep my feeders full but have only seen a few birds...my neighbor's cat lives on my deck so much of the time, I think he scares them away.....Great post my dearest friend, big hugs to sweet Alivia.......:-) Hugs

The birds must be grateful for all the food you are putting out for them, it's hard for them in such conditions. Alivia looks as though she is having lots of fun and that's a lovely cosy outfit she's wearing. The icicle is very impressive:)

Dear Wanda,
My husband and I were just talking about how much fun it was when we were little..getting all bundled up in our boots and snow pants to go play in the snow. Thanks for taking me down memory lane ;-)
Your friend,
Janet
PS..love the birds!

Nothing like seeing the snow from a child's perspective! Way too cold for me! I love seeing your birds.

What a winter playground for beautiful Alivia. She looks like a snow fairy soldier standing there with her huge icicle.

We have not had any significant amount of snow up here for weeks. I hope we get one more big snow storm before the season is over.

BTW, I've never seen so many cardinals in one place!!

Now that is how snow should be enjoyed. With a child like wonder and amusement. It truly is fun and my 70 year old body often follows my 6 year old mind into the snow.
Even if you do get snowed in, I know you will enjoy it. Thanks for the lovely walk in the snow.

Hi Wanda,
Seeing Alivia all bundled up, slipping, slidding and playing in the snow, It reminded me of all those childhood memories I had living in upstate New York. Yes, lots of snow like you have. Often late for school because of the desire to play rather than walk to school.
It has been quite cool here with cloudy skies and rain. Oh! where Oh! where is the warmth.
Hope you don't get snowed in.
Try to keep warm.
Take care.

You can almost feel her excitement as she rambles down the drive and around and around the tire marks. Laying in the snow, I remember those days. I'm sure to her the snow seems so much deeper than it really is, and seeing her looking down the hill, you can feel her urge to run down, only to be told no. Oh Bummer!! The birds are so pretty and it's fun to see so many come! Really, really enjoy your posts!...debbie

This was almost as good as a movie! Your photo style is great, and it was fun to see a little girl in pink romping in the snow. I hope these posts stick around for her when she's all grown up.

I liked the first photo best too, she will always remember times like these at play, with you making pictures. Your woods and bird pictures are beautiful too, but children steal the show every time.

You know - Alivia has the right idea - just embrace the snow. Walk and slide and fall and follow tracks. But I have to say when I bundle up I never look as fetching as she does!

Watching Alivia in the snow made me reach for my sweater. She sure is pretty in pink. Watching her play in the snow reminded me of how much I enjoyed the snow as a child, building forts and tunnels, snow angels, and following tracks like Alivia. I would stay out till I could barely move. I also promise, after seeing all the snow you have recieved and will get more of, to never complain about my Michigan snow. :) Stay warm and keep your camera chaarged.

WOW!!! But it is so beautiful ((from here))...my area got 4 inches Friday...It was gone by Sunday. Today it is a cool rainy 40 degrees.

Your pictures are really GREAT!!!

Thank you so much for your lovely comments this morning. I think your right...we should celebrate.

THANKS!

What a BEAUTIFUL child Alivia is! Her pink suit against the white snow is picture perfect, Wanda~
Good ol' fashioned winter fun...
Remember how it "hurt" for cold, cold fingers and toes to "come up to" room temperature :)
Nothing a good pair of cozy slippers and hugging a mug of Mom's hot chocolate didn't cure ♥
Thank you for the smiles ~ Maria

Aaaah but I'm sure IF you get snowed in, you'll make some delicious food, bake something, maybe light some candles, have a hot cocoa and play some games together? Maybe that 'll be the next post then? I loved this one, but the snow was a bit cold to lie on my back in!

I forgot to say, I made the buttermilk biscuits again for our Valentine's breakfast! They tasted delicious!

Beautiful photos of your pretty little snow angel. And the pink outerwear really pops against the whiteness.

I love that first shot of Alivia. What a fun walk you had with her through the snow. Your feeders get so much more colorful birds than mine. I have mostly Chickadees and Redpolls. The Redpolls come in bunches too, 30 to 40 at a time.

Beautiful, just beautiful. We have a few cardinals, juncos and chickadees everyday to brighten our world but all of those birds must lift your heart.

Alivia, what memories for her you are creating and preserving and for you as well. I love her total pink uniform. She is delightful--just like childhood should be. I love the randomness and that you follow and let her lead.

Good job on your poem.

Rebecca said...

Between you and Donna, the poetry soup is really getting thick! I LOVE it.

What an education Alivia is getting outside of the formal classroom!

The picture of the birds feeding is awesome. Cardinals and snow just go together. (Come to think of it, I think cardinals look grand against ANY background.)

Beautiful post, Wanda and beautiful photos. I don't much like snow but it all looks so pretty and inviting through your eyes!
And that first picture of Alivia is so, so pretty! I love it! She's a beautiful child and I love the beautiful relationship you two have. So sweet.

Also, I wanted to stop by to say that I'm still without my own computer so I won't be blogging for awhile, but I did want to thank you for your comments to me on my Mom's Anniversary. It does feel good to know there are those who share my feelings. And it helps to read how others cope.

Love to you,
Eileen

Hi Wanda~ Alivia looks so bright and pink against the white snow! What a magical day! A maze, long icicles, and all sorts of positions in the snow!
Amazing how many cardinals you have! Ours seem to lose their places to the pushy crows, black birds, and doves.
We put deer food out as there isn't anything green sticking out of the snow to eat. And more snow today here in New Jersey! Some winter, isnt it?! Love, me xx

Hello Wanda,

Yes, I'll fly before dawn Wed morning. I have been thinking of you. On Feb 19, it will be one year since I first visited your blog and commented (on any blog!) for the first time. I imagine you might post on that day since you will be thinking of your Mother. If so, I'm not sure I can comment, so I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you. I'll have my iPhone and will be able to go on-line a bit but sometimes commenting on blogs gets difficult. Lucinda is scheduled to post for me.

Elaine said...

Wanda, I have a friendship award for you on my blog. I do so enjoy visiting with you and going along on your rambles.

Your post is so interesting and so lovely and quietlike. I loved it.

Wanda your story was so much fun to read! Your sweet Alivia is such a doll and those cheeks are so perfect! There is so much energy how do you keep up? I can't believe how much snow you all have gotten over the winter. It is amazing...we are planting our garden! Huhoney has it all ready for seeds and plants...! I would love a snowed in day though...it would give me a great excuse to do just snuggle and watch some oldies...LOL it will never happen LOL. hugs and smiles across the miles...

The photos of Alivia are precious. She seems to be enjoying the snow. I love winter, but am tired of trudging through the snow to get to the wood shed and feed the animals. Every time I make a path, the wind blows the snow back over it and it's deep again. I've been bringing wood to the house on a sled. Your place looks like ours.

Debra said...

Very sweet...I used to love it on the ground too, in the snow. Think I'll wait for warmer weather though!!

As usual, a lovely visit to your home. I love the one where she sat for the photo. Such a look of seriousness on her face. And the birds. How often do you have to feed those feeders? The birds love to visit just like me.
