.....Mishaps & Difficults

This wispy feather I found
while walking in the field.....

~ photos enlarge~

it left me wondering
if there had been a mishap...
or was it a casual loss...
~
then just a few feet over...
lay another...only red...
no other prints or feathers...
so...still...wondering!

I found them on a morning
that was getting slightly warmer
it was slowly turning hazy...
fog coming from the valleys
on either side.

Snow on the roof eventually slid...

from inside it sounded like a
serious mishap...
snow cascaded down...

unto the back porch...but
no serious mishap occurred!

Although some of the birds...
did seem puzzled a bit!

Every time we had a slight thaw...
and the icicles began to drip...

it would turn cold
and snow again.....

...enough to
flatten the Bamboo even more.

While checking out the Bamboo...
I noticed a long deep trail
of tiny perfectly spaced prints...

of which...
I followed to the back yard
and down over the hill...

to this hole...
which later Herhusband said...
perhaps was a skunk's.
~
A serious mishap...
I managed to avoid!

I can avoid skunks...
but I can't avoid feeding the birds.
We went into winter with 8
of these large bags.
We are now down to 3.
A large trash can holds
the sunflower seeds.....

...from which
I scoop the seeds into a plastic jar...
and carry it to the bird feeders...
in this tote...

which isn't as difficult a job...
as Herhusband's job...
of toting the wood this winter
to the basement door...

...from the wood shed...
which is nearly empty now.
The beginning of winter
found it full...
it's a diificult job!

Alivia's dad...our oldest son...
has been working hard too.

Pulling Alivia in the snow.

They came in...to visit for a while...
We dried Alivia's boots, snow pants,
coat, scarf, hood, hat..
and brother's gloves
by the wood stove.

And then they were off again...
Alivia may be making it a difficult job...
I think she drags her hands!

Maybe he's in training...
for his own Winter Olympics!

Then they went on down the drive...
toward home...

with a few rest stops...
now and then...
to avoid any serious mishaps!

Younger son visited too...
but left in a less difficult way!

Meanwhile...
I'll be having coffee...

and croissants...

and watching the birds...
~
until Spring!

...which isn't difficult at all!

I have been face to face with skunks on occasion but I have never seen their trails. It's a very tidy and symmetrical trail!

HI WANDA-

Oh what a perfect Winter's day - with family visiting, and the wild life about your nature land being care for, hard work to keep warm, signs of Spring in the midst of a full dose of Winter - and hot coffee and flaky croissants - delicious. I love sharing in your world.

Love Gail
peace.....

So much snow! We got another 2-3" tonight!
Tomorrow, we're checking in on my father... He's in central NY where they had about 20" fall on them!
Wanda, your lil' Alivia is just adorable... her sweet happy voice enjoying the 'magic sleigh ride.'

Oh you do stock up on birdfeed. I haven't been able to keep up this winter!
They've enjoyed the songbird 'blend' but I've been out of their favorite, sunflower seeds, for a while.
I also find birdwatching with a nice cup of tea or coffee to be a favorite relaxing activity ~ enjoy the weekend!

Winter Olympics for toboggan pilling dads now that would be fun. Loved that you included the video. It just feels like you've brought me on your walk into your home and I am touched.

Beautiful post, as usual, Wanda! And I loved the video, very sweet. (Alivia sounded like she was saying, "Mush!")
And I wish I was there to enjoy your surroundings and your coffee and croissants!

I'm so happy you liked the blog, and I'm so grateful you let me use your photograph, it's perfection! I want Ray to enlarge that photo and I'll frame it and hang it on the wall, it's just so beautiful. I didn't realize it was your patio stone, makes it that much more special!

Love to you, Eileen

Another lovely, snowy story with a video too! I get so cross when pics don't open but it finally did; No. 7 with the three birds and the snow falling - priceless!

What a beautiful little spot you live in; another unique dot on the canvas! xa

Wanda, another wonderful post full of love of family and nature. Alivia is a doll and brings joy wherever she goes, and I think she was having much fun with her dad, love that the boys stopped over to visit you and herhusband.
Have a great weekend....:-) Hugs

Lovely post, your snow still looks pristine unlike the horrid grey that ours goes after the first few hours, grit lorries and traffic see to that. The photo with the cardinals is great, they make such a lovely splash of colour.

Wanda, the feather pictures are gorgeous, especially the first one! Do you plan your post as you take photos, or are you just that talented at putting it all together on the spot? Loved the 'mishap' theme of this one! Delightful, really.
Also wanted to thank you for going to visit Caroline. I'm a bit overcome by the response of bloggers like you to her...it's really wonderful. xo

There seems to be some more snow in the North East according to our news, you must be wondering when it will ever stop.
I love your photos of the feathers, I do that too but at the moment its dead fish! See tomorrows blog.
Cant have croisants make me fat.

That's a lot of snow coming down from the roof, and a lot of birds to be fed too! Loved the little video of Alidea with her dad, it sounded like they were having so much fun!!

Wanda! You have some fabulous shots there. And you have woven them into a beautifully coherent story of your life in the past days. I particularly like the photo of the birds with their heads turned wondering whatever just happened when the snow fell off of the roof.

Your children and grandchildren must love to come and visit you two in such a paradise. Were they raised there as well?

Anne said...

Hi Wanda,
Still a winter wonderland. It is so nice to read that your children and grandchildren love to come and share your world with you. Isn't that what is supposed to happen? Thank you so much for sharing your world with us. Did you ever find out who left those feathers?
I made the bannana pudding pie. My husband liked it very much. It was yummy!
Have a wonderful weekend. Stay warm.

Wanda, you make the deep, long and cold winter seem like a winter playland, with visits from the kids and grandkids, watching the birds enjoy their bounty that you provide, while you are sipping coffee and eating some delicious sweets. I love coming here. Love the music. Just love your writings period. Many Blessings to you and your winter family and people family...debbie

winter is a lot of work (and fun too) for you. For us looking at the pictures it is just heavenly. We have skunks right here in town but so far I have never met one, tho I have met their odor. I didn't know they lived underground. So also learned about that peanut butter and cornmeal today. Have a nice weekend, Wanda. Thanks for visiting me too.

Thank all of you as well... When my children were small we lived where my daughter lives now, which is where my husband grew up. We both actually grew up just a few houses apart. We moved to our present home, which is just over the hill, during their later school years. Both sons live on ajoining property, I also babysat 6of the 9 grandkids, while parents worked, so it's home to all!

I can get lost in your posts. They are so relaxing and beautiful. It has been a tough winter for the birds. Thank goodness they have you for a friend to feed them.

Wanda, your posts are absolutely Norman Rockwellin. If I feel a bit raggedy, I come here to have the edges smoothed. I know your posts can't be bottled but you could get away with subscription. Thank you for the freebee tranquilizer.
Could do with out the calories though.

I never tire of seeing the cardinals here. Even the photo of the female, while not as colorful as her counterparts, was absolutely beautiful.

Next winter I may need to put a feeder outside our living room window. It's not so easy to access, but might be worth the pleasure it would bring.

Have you ever posted about how many feeders you fill and how much seed it takes to stock the entire winter given that # of feeders?

Any basics you'd be kind enough to pass on would be interesting!

Hello Wanda, If the Olympics featured a Nordic Sled Pull, your son would be a contender! All that snow - looks as though everyone's job is harder this winter (even the skunk who had to drag it's fat body back to its burrow)! Glad you didn't meet him in person, though you did an admirable job of tracking... Thanks for including a few pics of your snow covered twisty lane. I'd be having a cup of coffee with you, watching those birds.

I just love, thanks for sharing, your weather is super super cold, stay warm, and Spring is coming...

Neat skunkprints! I've been smelling them in the mornings (while HOPing the puppy doesn't have a run-in while going out for his morning constitutional!). It's hard to believe they're out and about in this cold and deep snow!

Thank you for visiting me and leaving a comment.
Your photos are lovely, they almost (only almost!) make me miss having a snowy winter this year. It is so nice to see your birds too.
I'm glad you didn't encounter the skunk, some things are best avoided..!

Another lovely post! I'm wondering about those feathers too. It's so nice (I'm repeating myself) that you have your family so close.

Wonderful photos! Great post. Skunks in the snow? Don't they hibernate?

Elaine said...

I loved the video of Alivia and her dad! Snow sliding off the roof can really make you jump. The last house we lived in had a metal roof, and in the spring when the snow slid off it would sound like a train was coming through the house. It seemed to happen mostly at night, and it was most disconcerting.

Wanda..... said...

Thank you for visiting Theresa, Sheila, Jann, Janine, Sandy, and Elaine.

The skunks do hibernate, but they are starting to become active.

Claudia said...

The feathers in the snow... the mystery... the stories. So beautiful and poignant. And the snow - all that snow. But we are marching to spring. And your family knows how to enjoy the snow. (And how to enjoy a cup of coffee after)

Hi Wanda, that was a fun post. The one great thing is...hopefully as you see an end to the firewood you will see an end to the snow too! I think I would rather be having coffee and croissants too instead of training for my own Olympics LOL. Fun post! hugs and smiles

Loree said...

Hey there Wanda. The snow still looks lovely but I can understand your longing for spring. At least your family lives close by and they can all come and visit. Wishing that lots of warm spring breezes will come your way soon.

Wanda-just wanted to comment on your sidebar photos-what great pics. I see you a rock lover too. You have a couple with holes through them I've heard them called 'fairy rocks' and you get a wish. Have you heard that?

Midlife Roadtripper said...

I would have followed those footprints. How beautiful.

A female cardinal flew into my slider doors this afternoon. I was thankful to see her get up, hop over and sit on my outside chair. Rested a while, then flew off. So glad. And I've wondered how often you have to fill those feeders.

Dear Wanda, What a lovely post! I love seeing all of your birds. You seem to capture their pictures perfectly. I loved seeing your son pull your little granddaughter in the snow. It reminds me of the times I spent with my brother. He's seven years older than me and he would always pull me on his sled in the snow. It's so peaceful here. Thank you for this wonderful post ♥ I hope your day is lovely in every way.

Cheryl said...

Oh my goodness your posts are so wonderful and heart warming! Even finding a skunk hideout sounds like fun with your descriptions! And all I could think when I looked at the video was "pure joy, pure joy" for all involved! The birds are beautiful and how generous you are to keep them feed all winter.
