Promises

This is a closet granddaughter Alivia likes
to explore in when she visits...

Sometimes she heads for the basement to
play the electric keyboard...

other times...
she prefers drawing or making cards...
~

Then there are times she just wants to talk
and tell me what she's been doing...
~
~
but...with almost every visit
...we manage to take a walk somewhere...
I had promised to take her to the creek someday.
This time...it was going to be her first
walk in the creek bed...so that's where we went.
~

At first she was being cautious and careful....
~

It didn't take long for her to master the rocks...

play in the clear pools of cool water...

and discover the soft sand on the bottom.

She was always stopping to poke in the mud...

and took every opportunity to do it...

even while bending to walk under this log.

While walking and balancing on the rocks...

we found this one with a small rectangle cut in it...

and this one with many smooth layers...
I plan to go back and get them.

This smaller rock with a shell imprint...
we did bring home.

So after walking and playing in the water...

we rested for a short time...

and after writing her name in the sand...

we left the creek...

and headed up the hill for home...

and it was a "very" steep hill !!!

By the time we reached the yard...
well...let's just say I was tired...
I was carrying a tote bag of rocks up that hill...
and some photos came out as blurry as I felt.

We rested in the swing together and talked about the creek!
I promised to take her back.

~

I almost forgot...
Last week I promised to show you what
I found after the storm we had...

Another large box turtle...even
prettier than the 6 others...remember them?

AND
.
THIS
.
...I apologize beforehand...
.
OK?
.
SORRY!
.
.
.

Enlarge it.....to see it's red tongue!

Wonderful post! I loved getting a peek into the closet Alivia loves, and to see how you two spend your day together. It was nice to take a walk along with both of you, very sweet. Alivia must love coming to your home and exploring the woods with you, how exciting for her to visit the creek for the first time! And those rocks were amazing, I really loved the one with the shell imprint!

I hope Jayden wakes up early enough before we head out to the beach for me to show him your snake picture, he's obsessed with them lately. 'Wouldn't let me eat my breakfast in peace this morning, he kept taking his toy snake and hissing it at me and having it try to bite me!

Nice post, Wanda, thanks for sharing!
Love, Eileen

I love walking with you, and Alivia, what a wonderful place to explore. Such a pretty snake, ours are pretty boring. I always wanted a turtle as a pet when I was a child, had to make do with ours which again are pretty boring and live in water so do not make particularly good pets and they always escaped when i brought one home.
I should reply more often but I tend to look at my favorite blogs in bed in the morning using the tiny notebook which is hard to see the keys on at that time!

Once again, I LOVE your photos and sweet encounters with nature and Alivia. She is blessed and so are you! Thanks for sharing your moments.

You mentioned (on my blog) silence in the woods, but what about bird song, or the rustle of leaves and branches in the wind, not to mention insect or animal noises? In your photos above, there was obviously trickling water too, and your footsteps...

Wanda..... said...

Jinksy...I do experience complete silence there...not a single sound to be heard...nature and it's inhabitants are very quiet at times.

I'd have stayed in the closet if I'd known where this post was going to end! There's just SOMEthing about snakes. Eeeek!

I was "in to" rocks myself over the weekend. I was bringing them to the surface of the lake waters using my feet and leg muscles I never realized I had! I especially like the one YOU found with the shell imprint. What treasures you found in the creek bed!

What a wonderful walk. You have a beautiful granddaughter, and I know you enjoy her immensely.

I liked Alivia's favorite closet, too. And I like the seasonal creek and ravine. Such a wonderful place to explore. I'd tell you quit carrying all those rocks home, except then I'd have to tell myself the same thing—not to mention sticks, buckeyes, seed pods, paw paws, hickory nuts, maybe even some sort of critter. I always return with full hands and pockets. But that layered rock looks rather large, so don't hurt yourself.

Great post. Loved the ol' box turtle. And that's a dandy garter snake!

Wanda, what a great time you had with Alivia! Did she freak out over the snake? Last week when I was doing yardwork, I scared a snake that was on our walk going to the front door! He slithered away into my overgrown perennials and I'm afraid that's the end of my contribution to yardwork for the year! That thing was about 20 inches long, brown with white spots, and about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. EWWWW!

I am especially intrigued by the rock with the sea shell imprint...now how do you supposed a seashell got to a creekbed in SW Ohio? I don't know a thing about shells...but aren't they the exterior of SEA creatures? You have a special treasure here! What a souvenir of Alivia's first trip to the creek bed!

When Alivia grows up and sees all of these pictures, she will so love them :) With every picture comes a description. Going down the memory lane would be such a pleasure for her :)

I liked the snake Wanda, I actually like snakes! And that turtle was beautiful. I think you should let Alivia name him something other then # 7, I think he was the seventh.
Your little adventure in the creek reminded me of a creek I used to visit many years ago with my cousin in Indiana. The water was so clear and cold!
I can see why Alivia likes that closet so much. Do you put different things in it occasionally? Lovely photos again Wanda. LOve Di

Hi Wanda,
What another wonderful day you and Alivia had. I enjoyed going on the walk with you both and exploring. The rock that you were going to go back to reminded me of pancakes. It always is wonderful coming to your blog. I appreciate your visits to mine. Thank you, Wanda.

Hi Wanda
Enjoyed the walk very much with the little girl - your grandaughter perhaps.
I'd like to call round more often but I am hectic at work with a new job so I will come when I can.
Thank you for your most appreciated visits and comments. Bye for now ~ Eddie

Hello Wanda,
That last portrait of Alivia is very "dreamy" and beautiful. You're lucky to have found the fossil of the seashell. Just think of your land being covered by a long-ago sea!
I enjoyed hiking with you and seeing your critters.

I am so happy that you're sharing your love of nature with Alivia! It's a whole world that some people don't even know about, and an endless source of beauty and satisfaction.
Love the rocks, love the snake, love all of it.
We have a nest of garter snakes out behind the barn. Husband checks on them almost daily. I'm delighted they're there, doing what they do!
I love knowing that we've created a little home for them.

It must be so fun to walk in the woods. it's too hot and humid here to walk anywhere - not that we have any large woods.

I love walking along creeks... The rocks are great...love the smooth one with layers...
The box turtle has a lil' heart -in the photo near the bottom right.

Oh I have a snake photo to share... It was at the potter's house (a post I did a while back) ... I just don't know where to post it...
I should give you the photo, Wanda, for a "guest photo op" with your snake ;o)
ALL THE BEST !!! Maria

It was nice to have both an inside 'adventure' and an outside one today!

This is my second visit and I had the sound on this time which worked out to have the running water playing by the time I got to the creek photos! I love how the shadows play in your photography of Alivia on the creek bed...so beautiful.

Now where do you put all of these beautiful rocks that you find? Are they on display outside or
inside?

I think most of your followers would love doing all the things Alivia does at your home!!!

The sanke picture didn't bothe me at all? It's only creepy bugs that bother me. When do we get to see the picture of you charming the snake with your flute or walking around with him draped around your arms???

blessings and hugs,
marcy

I always get the feeling I was right there with you, and this time was no different. The box turtle is very pretty, but that snake truly made my toes curl! The stone with the shell imprint is precious, I would have brought it with me too. That was a very nice walk Wanda, thanks for tagging me along!

You didn't save the best to last for me! Looking at the pics of the wonderful journey of discovery with Alivia reminded me of a special place not far from me called Watersmeet, close to areas of Blackmore's 'Lorna Doone'. Lead me to thinking about when my daughters were that sort of age and doing similar.

That could have been ~me~ in the creek bed (er, um, several decades ago). The best place of all to spend a summer day!

Hi Wanda

what a sweet little girl ...

Is that snake venomous?????

We have lots of snakes in Au - some particularly nasty but not seen that often...but you do need to keep vigilant and remember that they are there somewhere - perhaps hibernating right now...

Happy days

Loved that walk with you and Alivia. It was wonderful to find yet another turtle and the rocks were great, especially that one with the shell you brought home, I bet you didn't bring home that snake.

Wanda, your post ALWAYS makes me smile and I feel so tranquil and serene when I am here. Your precious little granddaughter is a jewel. I am in heaven when I am around my little ones. I hope you are printing out each post as you do them and putting them in a book for posterity. I would love to have just books and books of photos and memories for my posterity to look at and wander through. I didn't even know my grandparents as they were in Holland and my parents immigrated to the states when I was just a baby! thanks for the wonderful walk once again.
